By: GZ on Domenica 16 Ottobre 2005 16:01

(!). But the surprise this time was that Japanese and other Asian companies topped the list of exploration and development contracts that were awarded Oct. 2 in Tripoli - an indication of the more aggressive bids this time around. In the first round at the beginning of this year, others lost out as U.S. oil companies, or the consortia in which they played a leading role, scooped up 11 of the 15 contracts on offer. Asian Companies Step In The U.S. companies were so eager to get back in after years of being shut out by sanctions that they were willing to pay a higher price. However, this time around other oil companies were determined to get a piece of the pie. "Asian countries import so much crude that security of supply is a real issue for them," said Craig McMahon, senior analyst and specialist in North Africa at oil consultancy Wood Mackenzie Ltd. "It could be that the Japanese government encouraged their companies to be more aggressive in bidding so that they could have the supplies to offset the huge imports they need," McMahon added. And that's more than reflected by the Japanese companies that won contracts - Nippon Oil (5001.TO), Mitsubishi Corp. (8058.TO), Japex, Inpex (1604.TO) and Teikoku - that all identified Libya as a core area for investment in the oil and gas sector. "We've been closely watching the potential of Libya's oil and natural gas resources," Nippon Oil said in a statement. Nippon Oil, the largest oil refiner in Japan in revenue and capacity, opened its branch office in Tripoli in September as part of an effort to expand its business in that country over and above the two projects in which they now hold stakes. ....

---------------------------------------------------------- Tropical Storm Rita's center was located about 275 miles (445 kilometers) from Nassau, the Bahamas, at 2 a.m. Miami time today, according to the latest advisory on the Web site of the National Hurricane Center. The season's 17th named storm is moving west- northwest at about 10 miles per hour (16 kilometers per hour) and is expected to continue on that path for the next 24 hours. Rita, which is expected to strengthen into a hurricane within a day, may skirt the Florida Keys tomorrow, enter the Gulf and cut across it to reach southern Texas in five days, maps from the hurricane center forecasting the projected path of the storm show. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the source of more than a third of the world's oil, may decide today to offer all the crude its 11 member nations can produce, Sheikh Ahmad Fahd al-Sabah, the group's president and Kuwait's oil minister, said in Vienna today. Such a decision would effectively suspend the group's quota system, which has regulated supply for about two decades. About 2 million barrels a day of OPEC production capacity are idle, the group's president said yesterday. Brent crude for October settlement rose 61 cents, or 1 percent, to $62.42 a barrel on London's International Petroleum Exchange.

-------------------------------- Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Kuwait is in talks with the Bush administration to build an oil refinery in the U.S., seeking to construct the nation's first new plant in three decades as gasoline and diesel prices surge to records. The Kuwaiti oil minister, Sheikh Ahmad Fahd al-Sabah, said he made the offer earlier this month and expects a reply next month. He said he's seeking a joint venture partner in the project and White House assistance in gaining the necessary permits. Gasoline prices soared above $3 a gallon on average in the U.S. after Hurricane Katrina struck the U.S. Gulf Coast, cutting oil production and closing oil refineries that counted for 10 percent of the country's refining capacity. The storm and scattered shortages in its wake forced the International Energy Agency to order members to tap their emergency stockpiles for the second time in its 31-year history. Big oil companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. usually are ``not interested in the refining sector,'' Sheikh Ahmad said today in an interview in Vienna, where the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries meets tomorrow. ``The return on their investment is not guaranteed. Because we have a lot of production, we can secure the supply'' of crude oil. A lack of construction in the U.S. and Europe during the last 30 years has left refineries with little margin for error and susceptible to breakdowns. Worldwide, refineries ran at 95 percent of capacity last year, up from 80 percent in 1984, according to the International Monetary Fund. The Kuwaiti minister didn't say how much the refinery might cost or where it may be located. White House spokesman David Almacy couldn't immediately comment on the matter.

By: lanci on Giovedì 15 Settembre 2005 17:51

BMW joins Daimler and GM in hybrid venture BMW is to pool resources with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler to develop and manufacture environment-friendly petrol-electric hybrid engines and transmissions. The pact could save the partners hundreds of millions of dollars in development costs while they seek to catch up with Toyota, the world leader in hybrid cars. Japan's biggest carmaker has been selling them for almost 10 years and predicts that hybrids will replace millions of conventional petrol and diesel engines in cars over the next decade. The three were already in talks with other potential partners in the alliance, said Tom Stephens, GM's group vice-president in charge of powertrains, yesterday following a joint statement announcing the deal. Under its terms, BMW has signed a memorandum of understanding with GM and Daimler, with the intention of entering a definitive agreement before the end of the year. GM and Daimler said they had committed themselves to a partnership under a separate agreement signed several days ago. The goal is to bring to market commercially viable so-called "two-mode" hybrid powertrains, which have fuel-efficiency and exhaust emissions advantages over conventional engines. A similar system is used in Toyota's Prius, total sales of which passed the 350,000 mark earlier this year. While GM, BMW and Daimler will share the unit's basic design, they intend to use it in a wide variety of vehicles, depending on each partner's marketing goals. "The creation of a shared technology platform will allow us more quickly to integrate the best technologies on the market," said Burkhard Goschel, BMW's management board member with responsibility for development and procurement. "And because the technologies will be adapted to the individual models, the participating brands will retain their distinctive characters." In "an alliance of equals", the partners are setting up a joint development centre at Troy, Michigan, to develop both the system. GM already has hybrid buses and a pick-up truck on the market but does not expect the joint venture's advanced system to appear in new vehicles before late 2007. Source: Financial times
