Tom Darden, CEO of Cherokee, says his big factor is the market size you’re going after. His successful deals have a big national or international impact – and a $50 million market isn’t good enough, because “the best you can do is build a business that size.”
And he says that too often entrepreneurs come to him with “a neat idea.”
“The maximum potential that they could have, it doesn’t move the meter,” he says, adding that scientists and intellectuals are so “fascinated” by the idea that they forget the market size. And he’s looking for ideas that are “worth losing the money,” with big impact potential.
The panelists were also asked about the benefits of investing in an outfit such as Lookout Capital, as opposed to investing as an individual.
Darden says it comes down to the due diligence that an investment firm can offer.
“I’m not really wired that way,” he says. “I’m thinking about offense, not defense. I’m thinking about the opportunity, the growth, the idea... But there are all these other things that are certainly more important.”
