The shares raced up $4.17 to hit a 52-week high of $11.61 following the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington. A jury had earlier found Rambus guilty of fraud while the company pursued patents for its chip technology. Rambus (RMBS: news, chart, profile) had been accused of hiding patent applications from semiconductor industry group meetings at which companies would set technological standards for memory chips. Rambus claimed it made all required disclosures to the group. Rambus, which licenses out its memory-chip technology to manufacturers, has been involved in courtroom battles after it began pursuing up to $800 million in patent royalties from such semiconductor companies as Infineon Technologies (IFX: news, chart, profile). However, in dismissing the ruling, the court said that "substantial evidence does not support the implicit jury finding that Rambus breached the relevant disclosure duty during its participation" in the standards group meetings. The court also revived a patent-infringement claim Los Altos, Calif.-based Rambus made against Germany's Infineon. Rex Crum is a reporter for CBS.MarketWatch.com in San Francisco.
